The most near-sighted cartoon character in history made a return to TV in the late 70s with What's New, Mr. Magoo?, featuring a few new faces and a familiar (and squinty) one. Mr. Magoo had been around since the late 40s, always voiced by Jim Backus, later star of Gilligan's Island.

Mr. Magoo gave the word 'curmudgeon' a whole new dimension; the ornery old man was stubborn to the core, which often lead him into trouble. Another troublesome trait of Mr. Magoo's was his poor eyesight that caused him to walk into things, fall into things--generally things that should be avoided. Driving a car with Mr. Magoo at the wheel was positively dangerous, though the little bald man usually managed to escape any accident unscathed.

Previously produced by UPA, an animation studio, What's New, Mr. Magoo? was licensed to DePatie-Freleng. The new studio softened Mr. Magoo's rough edges and made him a little more sympathetic. He was joined by nephew Waldo and pet dog McBarker, who looked like a canine version of his master.

The 26 episodes of the new cartoon were spread over two seasons and that was the last animated series seen on TV, not counting older Mr. Magoo specials shown around the holidays.
