Starring Buster Crabbe as Captain Gallant, this show combined the adventure of a western with the exotic local of the Arabian Desert. Instead of horses and Native Americans, there was camels and Arabs.

Gallant and his ward Cuffy Sanders (played by Crabbe’s 10-year-old son Cullen) were joined by their comic sidekick, Fuzzy Knight, in their efforts to stop the bad guys and maintain justice. Cuffy was orphaned after his father and brother died in the Foreign Legion.

Crabbe was passionate about this program and shot 39 episodes in just 9 months. Or maybe the regular sandstorms just made him want to work faster. The show was initially filmed at an outpost on the edge of the Saharan Desert, French Morocco, Marrakech, Paris and Athens. Producer Harry Saltzman, who would go on to work on James Bond, moved the production to less politically hostile areas Libya, Tripoli, and Italy.

In syndication, the show changed it’s name to Foreign Legionnaire.
