An early precursor to Nickelodeon’s Double Dare was Funny Boners—no giggling, we’re serious—which ran for a single season on NBC in 1954. It was the kids version of a popular prime time game show called Truth or Consequences, both shows developed by Ralph Edwards.

Jimmy Weldon, a ventriloquist, hosted Funny Boners—who giggled?—aided by his dummy, Webster Webfoot, a brash and boasting duck. There was also a real live assistant Easy Marvin—not a dummy or a puppet of any sort, as far as we know—who brought out the young contestants in a wheelbarrow. As soon as the kids were on stage, the pressure ramped up: they were asked a question and if they answered incorrectly, they were made to perform an uncomfortable and/or embarrassing task.

Webster proved to be the most enduring reminder of the game show, inspiring merchandise and future characters based on the wisecracking duck.
