Release History:

9/9/78 - 9/8/79 NBC
Featuring a troupe of various comic strip characters, the 1978 animated series The Fabulous Funnies entertained kids with familiar friends from the comics page.

Alley Oop was one of the more popular characters in the show. Debuting in comic strip form in 1933, Oop was also the subject of a popular 1960s novelty song. He and his girlfriend Ooola lived in the Kingdom of Moo ruled by King Guz, and the show was hosted by Oop’s friend and sidekick, Foozy. Another storyline featured Nancy, who, with her buddy Sluggo, was introduced to comics fans in 1940. Fritz and Hans, The Katzenjammer Kids, were the oldest of the entourage, having first been printed in 1997. And the newest was Broom Hilda, a 1,500 year old witch with power-controlling challenges, who debuted in 1970.

The cartoon focused on being educational, and featured issues such as health and safety. Unfortunately, the classic characters couldn’t save it, and it was cancelled after one season.
