Popular cartoon character Mr. Magoo had a major eyesight problem. His terrible near-sightedness, combined with his inherent snootiness, got him into trouble on a regular basis. As the caretaker to his nephew Waldo, he even got the little boy involved with his myopic mishaps.
Voiced by Jim Backus, who was also known as millionaire Thurston Howell III on Gilligan's Island, Magoo starred in this prime time NBC series that put the little guy in popular stories from history and literature. Inspired by the 1963 TV special where he played Scooge - Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol – this series had Magoo playing parts such as Don Quixote, Cyrano DeBergerac, and William Tell. Hefty novels such as Ulysses and Moby Dick were adapted for the almost-blind star. The show didn’t make it past its first season, and it wouldn’t be until 1977 when Magoo would return to the small screen in What's New, Mr. Magoo?
