A spinoff from the popular television show Barney Miller, Fish centered on one of that show’s most popular cops – Detective Phil Fish, played by dour-faced comedian Abe Vigoda. The series debuted in February 1977 and revolved around Fish and his wife Bernice who had just moved from an apartment to a run down house. They were scheduled to become foster parents to five kids, called “People In Need of Supervision,” or P.I.N.S.

The oldest P.I.N.S. was the charming Mike. Also in the house were tough guy Victor, sly Jilly, the television-obsessed Diane, and the comically-inclined Loomis. Psychologist Charlie Harrison made regular visits to the family to counsel them on their problems, but oftentimes Fish and Bernice found much more realistic ways to help their new family.

After 35 episodes on ABC, Fish was cancelled in June 1978. It appears occasionally in syndication, and is a favorite of fans of Abe Vigoda and his unique deadpan comedic style.
