Release History:

9/26/89 - 12/30/89 ABC
Based on the success of the popular sitcom, Who’s the Boss? ABC figured it would be a pretty safe bet to give a spin-off a shot. Rather than feature a major, or even a minor familiar star from the series, however, they opted to focus on a group of four girls that had appeared on one mere episode of the sitcom and that wasn’t quite enough to spark interest.

Debuting as part of the 1989 fall line-up, Living Dolls followed the lives of four pretty women who were trying to break into modeling in New York City. Charlie was the streetwise friend of Samantha Micelli (from Who’s the Boss?) who befriends four other modeling hopefuls – the naïve Martha, egotistical Caroline, and ambitious Emily (portrayed by a young and relatively unknown Halle Berry.) Their goals lead them to a motherly mentor named Trish Carlin, who owns the renowned Carlin Modeling Agency.

Even frequent guest appearances by Alyssa Milano (Samantha) and Tony Danza couldn’t save Living Dolls from the critics, a disinterested public and an early demise. After airing 12 episodes, the show was cancelled within four months. Luckily, it didn’t seem to extinguish Halle Berry’s star potential in the least. Along with a successful stint as a professional model, she would go on to star in a number of feature films and pick up an Academy Award for Best Actress for her stunning performance in Monster’s Ball in 2002.
