Family Matters existed for one character and one character only – Steve Urkel. The Coke-bottle glasses-wearing, Laura Winslow-stalking, “Did I do that?”-saying uber-nerd captured audiences imaginations and made the character into a star.

It wasn’t originally meant to be that way. The show was inspired by the classic sitcom, The Jeffersons', and initially centered on the Winslow family. However, every time that weirdo kid Urkel got in front of the camera, nobody else existed. That funny face and voice kept Family Matters on the air, and still manages to both entertain and annoy in syndication.
