Saturday mornings needed a dose of morbid light-heartedness (yes, an oxymoron there but that’s the Addams family for you). The same characters that spooked their way across the small screen in the 60s returned in the 90s: Gomez, Morticia, Pugsley, Wednesday, Granny and Uncle Fester. Lurch was there of course, as was Cousin Itt and Thing, the disembodied hand that did odd jobs around the Addams house. The house was actually a Gothic mansion, complete with bats and tons of cobwebs, located in the idyllic community of Happydale Heights because irony is a beautiful thing. This cartoon series featured the Normanmeyers, the hapless yuppie neighbors, who found living next door to the eerie family highly disconcerting.
There were notable voice talents in this cartoon series. John Astin, the original Gomez himself, voiced his character; Rip Taylor voiced Uncle Fester (oh, the humanity!); and Carol Channing squeaked along as Granny’s voice.
Like the first cartoon series, the 90s incarnation of the Addams family only ran for a couple of seasons but it’s still remembered fondly by its fans.
