Following the success of the 1966 film, Born Free, film producer Carl Foreman decided to adapt the film into a television series following the adventures of two real-life game wardens in Kenya, Joy and George Adamson.

In each episode, the Adamsons were shown on location in East Africa, doing their best to protect the surrounding wildlife from such dangers as natural disasters and roving poachers. Assisting them in their work was a local scout named Makedde. Also appearing was Else, a somewhat domesticated lioness that was also featured in the film.

Gary Collins and Diana Muldaur portrayed Joy and George in the television series, taking over for film stars, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, who became real-life animal activists following their participation in the movie.

A total of 13 episodes were produced for this short-lived 1974 series but in the world of television, it quickly found itself on the endangered species list and would become extinct a year later.
