The Fantastic Four were based on the original Marvel comic book about a team of scientists who are struck by cosmic rays when they’re attempting to test and launch a rocket ship. The ship passes through radiation that overwhelms its shields and the scientists are zapped. The ship crash lands back on Earth, and the team realizes they’ve all been afflicted with strange new powers.

Rocket designer Reed Richards’ limbs can now stretch out endlessly and his new superhero name is Mr. Fantastic. His wife Sue can make herself invisible, and is known as the Invisible Girl. Sweet-natured doofus Ben Grimm becomes a super-strong, orange granite beast called The Thing. And Sue’s younger brother Johnny Storm is able to wrap his body in fire with the words “Flame on,” and can also fly. His super hero name becomes The Human Torch.

The team gets to their adventures in the U-Car, designed by Richards, and they battle bad guys such as the Mole Man, the evil Doctor Doom, and the alien Skrulls. The show ran for two season, followed by a season of repeats, before it was cancelled in 1970. A few years later, The New Fantastic Four was broadcast, with the robot H.E.R.B. replacing The Human Torch. After one season, that iteration was done too, and our brave superheroes wouldn’t return again until fifteen years later with The Marvel Action Hour.
