Batman's action took place a few years after the time frame of Batman: The Animated Series. Dick Grayson had graduated college and decided to exchange Robin's colorful costume for Nightwing's snazzier black number. Another college graduate, Barbara Gordon, kept her role as Batgirl. Together with Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman, and his new ward Tim Drake, a.k.a. the new Robin, Dick and Barbara kept the streets of Gotham safe from the likes of the Joker, Harley Quinn and Catwoman.
Superman: The Animated Series recounted the adventures of the Man of Steel, who was actually an alien from the planet Krypton. A refugee fleeing Krypton's destrcution, baby Superman was found and adopted by a kindly Earth couple who raised him as their own (they also named him Clark so maybe they weren't all that kind). Clark grew up in rural Smallville and possessed super powers which he put to good use, protecting all the nice people from all the bad people. He kept his dual identity secret even after he moved to Metropolis and got a job at the Daily Planet newspaper. His friends--Lois Lane, Perry White and Jimmy Olsen--thought Clark Kent was a naive shmuck and that was the way Clark wanted it. He needed the cover of anonymity to fight evil masterminds like Lex Luthor, Jax-Ur and Mala.
The combined series ran for two years concurrently with its component segments but since the world can never have enough of Superman or Batman, no one really complained.
