Played memorably by Walter Matthau in the film, this role of Morris Buttermaker, a down-on-his-luck pool cleaner and alcoholic was played by veteran actor, Jack Warden. Helping him corral the kids was Dr. Emily Rappant, the school Principal, played by actress, Catherine Hicks. The show focused mostly, however, on the team of incorrigible prepubescent ball players who lost far more games than they won. While most of the kids were relatively unknown, one in particular went on to bigger and better things, actor Corey Feldman.
Although the show only lasted a short time, it is still fondly remembered by some as a show that might have done better if given more than one season at bat. But nobody ever said the big leagues were easy and after one year on the air in 1979, it was back to the minors for the Bad News Bears. A new cast of kids, led by coach Billy Bob Thorton would take to the field over 25 years later, in a mostly-forgettable remake of the original film.
