This show was based on the true story of the Arizona Rangers, an agency consisting of 26 men—a captain, a lieutenant, and four sergeants, twenty privates—who patrolled the Arizona Territory at the beginning for the 20th century. They were charged with keeping law and order in that vast territory; reportedly, there was no money for more than 26 of them.
26 Men’s opening music was a driving drumbeat, bold and militaristic to represent the no-nonsense attitude and high ideals of these lawmen. Tristram Coffin and Kelo Henderson portrayed the lead characters, Captain Tom Rynning and rookie Ranger Clint Travis, respectively. The rest of the bunch stayed mostly in the background and there were few regulars during the show’s two-season run in the late 50s. Unusually for that era, 26 Men was shot on location in Arizona, frequently utilizing local residents in small roles and as extras.
Although it’s often overlooked, the series consistently delivered quality western entertainment throughout its run. The creators of 26 Men were all well versed in that particular genre, having produced and/or acted in similarly themed films and series. Tris Coffin was an established character actor who played the grizzled Ranger wonderfully and the stories were thoughtfully written and well acted.
The series is now available on DVD, thankfully ensuring continued enjoyment of this true Frontier tale.
