Based on the ground-breaking science fiction film, the animated version of Fantastic Voyage featured the members of the "Combined Miniature Defense Force", a group of government scientists shrunk to microscopic size to get into areas that regular-sized people could never each. The crew was led by Commander Jonathan Kidd, and their ship was named the Voyager. Team members included Busby Birdwell, who designed the ship, Professor Carter, biologist Erica Lane, and Guru, who had some mysterious power that usually came in handy whenever the crew was in a jam. The ship took them on adventures by going under water, flying through the air, or blasting off into outer space. Their enemies were often mysterious microscopic creatures, or even miniaturized enemy spies.
Even with its simple animation and story lines, the cartoon loyally stayed true to the original movie. The episodes paid careful attention to the details of each miniature world, and the dialogue was written from a more grown-up perspective. As a matter of trivia, actor Ted Knight, who created the part of Ted Baxter on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, voiced many of the characters.
