Two years after Disney released the feature film Aladdin, they brought the story of the “street rat” to the small screen as part of their syndicated weekday programming block, Disney Afternoon, along with Saturday mornings. The series debuted right after the release of the direct-to-video sequel The Return of Jafar, and picked up the story where that film left off.
In the TV series, Aladdin is living on the streets in Agrabah with his monkey sidekick Abu, and is still not married to the lovely Princess Jasmine. Joining them are the regular cast from the film – the fast-talking, shape-changing Genie and cranky parrot Iago, who used to be a bad guy, but now joined the ranks of the good guys. Instead of movie villain Jafar, Aladdin is fighting the evil sorcerer Mozenrath, the cruel inventor Mekanikles, and the sneaky thief Abis Mal.
Many voice stars from the original film provided the character voices for the series. Robin Williams’ Genie was replaced by Dan Castellaneta, best known as the voice of Homer Simpson. The comedic wisecracks from Iago and Genie provided strong comedy, and the show had a successful run. It continues in syndicated repeats, and was followed by a third direct-to-video feature called Aladdin and the King of Thieves.
