MEMORY:

The Ed Sullivan Show was a staple in my family's entertainment schedule. No matter what, there was something for everyone on his show. Music, juggling, comedy, you name it. Watching The Beatles for the first time was fabulous. I remember Sullivan trying to talk over the sound of random shrieks from the audience, and his having to tell them to "settle down"! All the good that did! The instant he finished their introduction, the studio must have shook with the sound of the screaming from the audience.

My favorite recurring character was Topo Gigio. Topo was an engaging little fellow. I'm sure Sullivan had a rudimentary script to follow during these interactions, but Topo could catch him off guard, sending Sullivan into laughter, getting him off-track. Sullivan seemed so unaffected by the talented guests he hosted on the show, so his being surprised by the humor of a mouse with a French accent was a treat. "Eddie, kiss me goodnight!"
