Based on the sequel to the low budget horror movie of the same name, which starred a relatively unknown George Clooney, the animated Attack of the Killer Tomatoes followed the evil Dr. Putrid T. Gangreen, a sinisted scientist with a green thumb, living in the town of San Zucchini. When one of his creations, a homicidal half tomato/half human called Zoltan overthrows the doctor, the result is an all out war between fruit and human. Rounding out the cast were Fuzzy Tomato, a traitor to the tomato community who lived in hiding, masquerading appropriately as “the world’s ugliest dog” to save his skin. Tara, another outcast, looked like your average teenaged girl, at least until salt was tossed on her, reverting her back to her tomato roots. Befriending the two loners was Chad Finletter, a ten-year old boy who sympathized with their plight, was privy to their secret, and helped them fight the good fight against Gangreeen and Zoltan’s sinister ways.
Boasting the title of television’s first entirely computer animated series, The Attack of The Killer Tomatoes was an unexpected success for the Fox network. It left the airwaves briefly in 1992, but four years later was resurrected for the network’s Saturday morning lineup, pleasing the many fans of this quirky homage to one of the most wonderfully awful series of spoofs to ever grace the big screen.
