Many seem to think that The Beagles were a parody of The Beatles. And with only one letter distinguishing the two, and the fact that both were “musicians,” it’s easy to understand why. Unfortunately, that is where the similarities end.

The show centered around two dogs named Stringer and Tubby who formed their own rock and roll singing duo and in between writing, performing, recording (whatever contractual responsibilities actually fall into doggie duo territory) they were usually getting into mischief. Generally, their adventures were shown in four-part installments, two per half-hour episode, and with each of the first 3 parts ending in a cliffhanger of sorts. They were managed by a Scottish Terrier named, of course, Scotty, and it was usually his publicity stunts that caused most of their mishaps.

With songs that were actually pretty well-done, and tantalizing teasers that made sure viewers tuned in to the following episode, this 1966 series actually did well in its lone season of production. ABC picked The Beagles up the following year and aired reruns but like the Fab Four, The Beagles career ended well before their prime. OK, so maybe there is another similarity to those Liverpool lads.
