If every species has its version of Superman, than Darkwing Duck is the superhero extraordinaire to the world of fowl.

A spinoff from Disney’s successful DuckTales, Darkwing Duck takes place in St. Canard, where evil is kept at bay by Drake Mallard – mild-mannered, average duck by day, crime-fighting superhero Darkwing Duck by night. Unfortunately, Darkwing and his pilot Launchpad McQuack weren’t actually all that good at fighting crime. Luckily, Darkwing’s adopted daughter Gosalyn and her friend Honker Muddlefoot were the brains behind the whole operation, and usually saved the day.

Darkwing’s superhero rival, Fenton Crackshell, also known as Gizmo Duck, had as big an ego as Darkwing himself. They competed in the attempt to foil criminals such as electrically charged rat Megavolt, a bizarro Darkwing character called Negaduck, Bushroot, and the leader of F.O.W.L. (the Fiendish Organization of World Larceny), Steel Beak.

The show ran in April 1993 on The Disney Channel, and later expanded to ABC’s Saturday morning schedule and the Disney Afternoon programming block on ABC’s weekday syndication lineup. It was just as successful as DuckTales, and the expanded programming made sure that whenever a villain was threatening St. Canard, Darkwing Duck was there to help.
