Earthworm Jim, a supersuit did fall."
Opportunity often comes from unlikely places. In the case of the dirt-devouring earthworm named Jim, it literally fell from the sky – in the form of a magical “supersuit” that transformed regular ol’ Jim into a formidable superhero. Based on the popular series of video games created by Doug TenNapel, the unforgettable Earthworm Jim first appeared on the WB network in 1995.
When mysterious suit falls from outer space, landing on top of Jim, he tries the garment on and finds himself with a new muscular physique as well as spiffy super powers. He assumes the role of planetary protector, eradicating evil wherever it rears its ugly head. Armed with a special ray gun and pocket-sized rocket transporter, and assisted by a couple of cohorts named Peter Puppy and Snott, Jim was now an earthworm to be reckoned with.
Like all superheroes, Jim had no shortage of dastardly enemies, including bounty hunter Psy-Crow, Bob the killer Goldfish, feline foe Evil the Cat, and, of course, the unforgettable Queen Slug-For-a-Butt. The diabolical Queen held her lovely twin sister Princess What’s Her Name hostage within her queendom, and only one very special worm had the power to save this damsel from distress. Unfortunately, magical suits weren’t the only thing that descended from the sky – at the end of each episode, one of the characters, usually Jim would have the misfortune of being crushed by a cow.
Earthworm Jim featured a collection of familiar voice actors such as Dan Castellaneta (Homer Simpson,) Andrea Martin and John Kassir (The Crypt Keeper on Tales from the Crypt.) Both quirky and surreal, the cartoon appealed to both kids and adults, while also performing a public service to dirt eating organisms everywhere - to keep an eye on the heavens, if not for an opportunity to save the world from evil, then at least to keep from being bombarded by falling bovines.
