"Hey there, sweet thing. Wanna frisk me?"

If ever someone was a legend in their own mind, it was the narcissistic womanizer named Johnny Bravo. Blessed with good looks, perfect hair, and bulging muscles, he was unfortunately cursed with an ego the size of Montana. Johnny was convinced that he was God’s greatest gift to women, and they, in turn, were completely unimpressed, especially with his groan-inducing pick-up lines.

Debuting in 1997 on the Cartoon Network, the animated Hanna-Barbera series Johnny Bravo centered around the dim-witted hunk-in-his-own-mind. Although he possessed the good looks of a James Dean, the seductive voice of an Elvis Presley, all of his muscle flexing and boisterous bravado failed to make up for his lack of intelligence and women could spot his shortcomings a mile away. Johnny, of course, remained entirely oblivious to the fact that there was anything wrong with him and was often shocked when women didn’t worship the ground on which he walked. No matter how much he was rejected, his ego remained unscathed.

The only woman that Johnny really showed any respects towards was his loving mama, Bunny Bravo. And there was one female in his life who did actually care for him –Suzy, his 8 year-old neighbor. These two were the only members of the opposite sex who seemed to find any redeeming qualities in the egotistical moron, who, unbeknownst to him, was viewed as a laughing stock by every other member of the gender.

If the name Johnny Bravo sounds awfully familiar, it’s probably because it was the stage name of Greg Brady’s rockin’ alter-ego on The Brady Bunch. The show’s creator, Van Partible, insists however that he took the name from his own full name – “Giovanni Bravissimo Partible.”

Award-winning actress Brenda Vaccaro lent her voice to Johnny’s mom, Bunny, and an impressive list of well-known entertainers made guest appearances on the cartoon, including Alec Baldwin, Adam West, Dionne Warwick, Don Knotts and Mick Jagger. A number of animated Hanna-Barbera alumni, including Fred Flintstone, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound and the cast of Scooby Doo all made occasional appearances on the show as well.

Johnny Bravo was a result of a recurring short on Cartoon Network’s World Premiere Toons, and managed to take the #1 spot for “Toon of the Year” which led to the creation of the cartoon series. Johnny Bravo managed to survive for a respectable 4 seasons and 65 episodes. In the final season, the name was changed to JBVO. The first season of Johnny Bravo was released on DVD in 2007.
