Fireball XL-5 was another creation from Sylvia and Gerry Anderson, and featured their trademarked “supermarionation”  process, which featured puppets that were manipulated with both strings and electronics for a creepily lifelike look. The series was a predecessor to their highly popular show, Thunderbirds.

The Fireball LX-5 was a 300-foot long rocket ship. Led by pilot Steve Zodiac, the ship patrolled Sector 25 of Space City for the World Space Fleet in the year 2067. Zodiac was joined by navigator and scientist Matt Matic, the ship’s doctor Venus, and Robert the Robot, who acted as the autopilot. They also brought along Zoonie, a pet “lazoon” who would mimic people.

Associated Television in England was the first to show the groundbreaking program, and a year after its U.K. debut, it crossed the ocean to entertain young American sci-fi fans.
