Studio:
Hanna-Barbera
Release History:
9/12/81 - 9/11/82 NBC
The new kid on the block was Teen Force, which consisted of a trio of teenagers, all of whom possess super powers. Kid Comet is the swift one of the bunch, able to move in excess of the speed of light and therefore perform time travel. Moleculad has the ability to manipulate his molecular structure at will, which always comes in handy. Finally, Elektra handles all telekinesis and telepathy duties. The team also gets a little help from two blue little aliens named Plutem and Glax. The main enemy of the Teen Force is Uglor, evil ruler of the planet Uris. He can both fly and shoot lightning from his eyes (a pretty formidable combination if you think about it.)
After 20 years away from the Saturday morning lineup, everyone’s favorite future talk-show host, Space Ghost, returned with 22 all-new episodes. For those who have trouble remembering these things, Space Ghost had the ability to make himself (and his transportation) invisible through use of some high-tech gadgetry. He could send bolts of power from his wristbands (a talent that came in mighty handy when he was hosting his own talk show,) and shoot both cold and heat rays when applicable. Assisting the famous superhero were two teenagers, Jan and Joyce, and, of course, a monkey mascot named Blip (what would a Saturday morning space show be without one of those?).
Herculoids (which, like Space Ghost, was an animation from the 60s) took place on the planet Quasar, where King Zander, Queen Tara and their son, Dorno, were in constant danger of being attacked by alien forces. Luckily, the had five Herculoids to act as protectors – Zok, a galactic dragon whose tail and eyes could shoot power rays; Igoo, an indestructible ape made of stone; Tundro, half-rhino, half-dinosaur, who could shoot rocks from a cannon within his horn; and Gloop and Gleep, two blobs of protoplasm that could assume the shape of any object. When necessary, the royal family even got in on the action and were pretty handy with a slingshot.
Finally, a true cartoon icon rounded out the Space Stars, the famous canine companion of The Jetsons, Astro. Astro and the Spacemutts teamed the pooch with the dimwitted Cosmo and always-cranky Dipper as they took a bite out of crime under the command of their boss, Space Ace.
Surprisingly, it would be another famous dog created by Hanna-Barbera that would spell inevitable doom for Space Stars. The show was placed in the same Saturday morning timeslot as Scooby-Doo, and he proved more invincible than all the Space Stars combined. After a single season, the series was cancelled, although the two big names, Astro and Space Ghost, would both go on to make future cartoons.
