Release History:

1994 syndicated

The third animated series featuring these super-human Marvel Comics superheroes aired in 1994 as part of the weekend syndicated Marvel Action Hour. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created The Fantastic Four in 1961, and this cartoon version featured the original characters and storylines straight from the comic books.

The back story is that a rocket ship, designed by scientist Reed Richards, is about to be taken for a test flight by Reed, his wife Susan Richards, pilot Ben Grimm, and Susan’s younger brother Johnny Storm. The ship is bombarded by cosmic rays that pass through its shields, and the scientists get plied with radiation. After the ship crash lands back on Earth, the passengers find that they each have new powers.

Reed, now called Mr. Fantastic, has limbs that can stretch endlessly in any direction. Sue can make herself invisible, and calls herself The Invisible Woman. Ben becomes a super-strong orange granite giant called The Thing. Johnny can set himself on fire with the command “Flame on”, and can also fly. He’s called The Human Torch.

This version of the story was slightly more serious than earlier Fantastic Four cartoons. Our heroes battled bad guys such as Dr. Doom, the planet-eating Galactus, the shape-shifting Skrulls, and Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner, who was intent on making the Invisible Woman his wife. The series featured two and three-part stories and romantic themes that continued throughout the season – such as Johnny’s relationship with the Inhuman Crystal.

The Marvel Action Hour ran for two seasons, and The Fantastic Four ran next to another Marvel show,  Iron Man. After 26 episodes each, The Fantastic Four was cancelled, and fans returned to the comic books for further adventures.
