There was a cat that had it all,
Fortune and fame, top of the game,
Up until he hit the wall…"
Fans of the animated Disney series Raw Toonage were first introduced to the zany antics of Bonkers D. Bobcat and his sidekick, Jitters A. Dog in 1992. The following year, he was given his own series, Bonkers!, which brought him back to Toon Town as a washed up show business star who would find a new career as a feline crime fighter.
After saving the life of cartoon icon, Donald Duck, Police Chief Kanifky decided to make Bonkers a part of his police force. Pairing the manic feline with grim and gruff Detective Lucky Piquel, who just so happens to hate “toons,” the two nonetheless worked together to try and solve various crimes in the Hollywood/Los Angeles area. Unfortunately, Bonkers generally caused more problems than he solved and drove Piquel crazy in the process.
After years of working together, Piquel would finally land a cushy job with the FBI and the hyperactive Bonkers would meet his new human partner, the beautiful Sgt. Miranda Wright. She was much more patient with her new partner and together they continued to fight crime, while often interacting with a plethora of familiar faces who lived in Toon Town. Most notable were the brooms from Fantasia, characters from Alice in Wonderland and the most famous rodent in the world, Mickey Mouse. With the diabolical “Collector” on the loose, it was up to Bonkers and Wright to ensure their safety and foil the Collector’s never-ending plots to kidnap these famous residents.
One somewhat confusing aspect of Bonkers! is that the show was actually aired out of sequence. His days with Miranda Wright were chronicled in the first season, while the second season went back in time to his days with Detective Piquel. Luckily fans were able to keep the sequence events straight and this Tarantino-like approach didn't diminish their love for the series in the slightest.
Besides the 65 episodes that were produced of Bonkers!, he was also immortalized in three video games – Super Nintendo’s Bonkers in 1994, a Sega Genesis version of the game in 1995 and Bonker’s Wax Up for the Sega Game Gear console.
There are no plans to date to release the Bonkers! series on DVD, but with the success of the release of other Disney shows like Duck Tales and Darkwing Duck, fans of Bonkers! remain hopeful that they will soon be able to relive the wacky adventures of this beloved kitty crime fighter whenever their heart desires.
