The same team that produced the immensely popular Gilligan's Island in the 60s tried their collective TV hand at an animated series that picked up the action where the live-action sitcom ended, i.e. seven people stranded on an uncharted isle with a large number of coconuts.

Sherwood Schwartz, the producer of Gilligan's Island, and pretty much the entire cast from the original show got together for the cartoon version of the S.S. Minnow's crew and passengers. The skipper, the millionaire Howell and his wife, the movie star, the professor and Mary Ann joined Gilligan in an endless quest to get off that blasted island. A new addition for the animated series was Snubby, Gilligan's pet monkey. Every attempt to escape was inevitably bungled or thwarted by the feckless Gilligan who was never voted off the island for some unfathomable reason.

The animated show was almost as popular as the original and ran for three seasons on ABC. It also spawned Gilligan's Planet, another cartoon series produced in the 80s, wherein the castaways blast into space and end up on an uncharted desert planet (without coconuts).
