Release History:

11/22/80 - 9/8/84 NBC
As it entered its 30th year on the air, The Flintstones were up for something new – and really long – with The Flintstones Comedy Show. This 90 minute program on NBC’s Saturday morning lineup included an array of six different segments in a variety show style, interspersed with clips on safety, health, and other good things for kids.

The section called “The Flintstone Family Adventures” centered on regulars Fred, Wilma, Barney, and Betty. Their kids Pebbles and Bamm Bamm were now teenagers. The kids actually also had their own segment called “Pebbles, Dino and Bamm Bamm.” Here, the kids and their pet Dino solve mysteries in Bedrock with their buddies Moonrock, Wiggy, Penny and Schleprock.

Fred and Barney join with the Schmoo (the Al Capp character who appeared with them in Fred and Barney Meet the Shmoo) in “Bedrock Cops.” Fred and Barney are police deputies working for tough Sergeant Boulder, and Schmoo’s shape-shifting abilities come in handy. Wilma and Betty get their turn in “Captain Caveman,” where they both work as reporters for the Bedrock Daily News under the direction of editor Lou Granite. They go out to cover the crime beat, not knowing that Chester the copyboy is actually superhero Captain Caveman (who came to the show from his own Hanna-Barbera series, Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels).

Not to be outdone, Dino appeared in his own segment, “Dino and the Cavemouse,” where Dino ran after a mouse a la Tom and Jerry. The last segment didn’t even star the Flinstones’ cast. “The Frankenstones” featured a family of Addams Family-like ghouls – albeit prehistoric ghouls. Dad Frank, mom Hidea, son Freaky (voiced by Paul "Pee Wee Herman" Reubens), daughter Atrocia, and pet Rockjaw made up the family. When they move next door the Flintstones and build a scary mansion, Fred isn’t at all pleased.

All of these segments were interspersed with blackout gags and educational spots. Fred might play with the viewers, showing them how to unscramble famous faces. Kids were taught how to make toys, how to draw Fred and the rest of the characters, information about exercise and good eating habits, and how to move to the “Dance of the Week.”

By 1980 the variety show format was on its way out, but the Flintstones had enough name recognition to last a few seasons before NBC pulled the plug.
