The show featured the time's most popular artists, performing in front of the screaming, teeming, teen crowd. Instead of bringing the acts to the studio though, Where the Action Is took the audience to the see the acts at various venues in Southern California. Hey, don't complain, non-Californians; that was where the action was.
Guest performers included many big stars of the day like the Supremes; Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons; Frankie Avalon; The Byrds; Sonny & Cher; Herman's Hermits; the Kinks; Aretha Franklin; Donovan; the Turtles; Davy Jones; Otis Redding; The Statler Brothers; the Kingston Trio; Petula Clark; Roy Orbison; the Moody Blues and many, many, many more. More and more. A lot.
The show also had regular musical guests, most notably Paul Revere & the Raiders. The band had not been widely known but their lively stage performances impressed Dick Clark who signed them on as the house band and those lads' fortunes were made.
Where the Action Is brought plenty of action to America's living rooms for two years. Clark attempted a revival in the mid-70s but lightning didn't strike thrice and that show ended after a single season.
