Sheena was as wily and clever as any of the animals she grew up with and furthermore, she had opposable thumbs so in a fight between lion and Sheena, guess who came out on top? That's right, the one with the spear.
A blonde in the jungle in a little leopard bikini just begged to be made into a TV series and in 1955 the statuesque model Irish McCalla played the title role in the syndicated Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. The tall, athletic McCalla fit the role to a tee and if she didn't win any acting awards, no one was really bothered. The show was filled with the same kind of daring adventures as the comic books, following Sheena as she battled and outwitted humans and animals alike. Bob the trader and Chim the chimp joined Sheena as her occasional sidekicks.
The series was fairly popular for two seasons and though it didn't last long, it became one of the most enduring TV memories for the baby boomer crowd.
