Roadside Paul Bunyan Statues

And he's a biggie â€" An icon of the area for over 50 years, the talking Paul Bunyan is the largest Paul. As you enter Paul Bunyan Amusement Park; Brainerd, Minnesota- Paul looks over at you, raises his hand, and greets you by name. How, exactly does he know each and every visitor, one might wonder? Well, usually there's a crafty adult involved feeding the names of the children and where they're from to the ticket-taker, who radios the man in the booth (No, not the Gweat and Tewwible Oz) who operates Paul's limbs, mouth, head, and somewhat sleepy eyes.

Big Boy

Shoney's is a restaurant chain, operating mostly in the Southern and Midwestern United States that once had a franchise with the Big Boy chain. It is named after Alex Schoenbaum, the owner of the original chain of Big Boy restaurants in the southeastern United States in the 1950s.

Shoney's owned the Big Boy franchise in most Southeastern states. In other states, other chains owned the franchise and Shoney's expanded under the name "Shoney's Town and Country Restaurants" which were identical, except for the lack of the Big Boy iconography. In 1984 a dispute arose among the several Big Boy franchise holders about this practice and as a result, Shoney's gave up its rights to the Big Boy name, thus Shoney's restaurants no longer have a statue of the Big Boy mascot in front of the store. The restaurants were all simply renamed "Shoney's", the Big Boy sandwich was simply renamed the "double decker hamburger" and "Shoney Bear" was developed as a corporate mascot. From this point, the company was effectively separate from Big Boy. Basically they've sucked ever since.

Mystery Spot

When I was a kid I loved to stop and see the U.S.S. Alabama on our way to Florida. I still love to stop now whenever I travel that way. My favorite thing about driving through Mobile is the Bankhead Tunnel. The Bankhead Tunnel is an under-river tunnel built by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1941. The tunnel is used for automobile traffic that is entering the city of Mobile from the eastern side of the bay. As the vehicles pass through its enormous steel tubes, ship traffic passes undisturbed above.

Land of the Lost

Two of the resident dinosaurs in the "Land of the Lost" were dubbed "Grumpy" and "Alice," by the Marshall family. These two quarreling dinosaurs were a constant threat to the Marshall's who often sought the safety of the tree tops while they waited for their unwelcome dinosaur neighbors to go away. Other dinosaurs seen on the show included: Dopey the baby Brontosaur (befriended by Holly), Emily the Brontosaur, Junior the baby Allosaur, Spot the Coelophysis, Spike the Triceratops, Lulu the two headed monster, and Torchy the Dimetrodon. The SleeStacks were ok- but the main reason to watch was for the dinosaurs!

Space: 1999

Well 1999 came and went without a 'Moonbase Alpha' or nuclear explosion causing the moon to leave the Earth's orbit. However the show captured an audience including myself and in doing so helped advance television sci-fi/special effects. In a way; Star Trek: Voyager reminded me quite abit of Space 1999. The crew of Moonbase Alpha wandered throughout the galaxy attempting to get home to Earth.

Lunch

I remember 1976, I'm in the 4th grade, and everything is red, white, & blue! I had this Bicentennial lunchbox. Another kid, (5th or 6th grade) took it away from me and stomped on it coming back from lunch one day. I then proceeded to pick up the lunchbox and beat the &*!# out of the guy with it! Hey-don't mess with a kid's lunchbox!
