My first Halloween

I was a mere three months old when I experienced the magic of my very first Halloween (you can see how excited I was). My mother made matching clown costumes for me and my older brother that year.

Alfred Hitchcock Presents

Did you ever notice that all babies have Alfred HitchcOck's famous portly profile at some point during their development?

My first birthday

Here I am being presented with my very first birthday cake. Like most one year-olds, I have no idea what is going on. My brother Tony (the red-haired lad in the foreground) looks poised to blow out the candle for me (thanks Tony! that's what big brothers are for...that, and frequent beatings).

Three Wheels Of Wonder

I practically lived on my tricycle. It was my first taste of wheeled mobility and I couldn't get enough of it.

The best thing about a tricycle is that you could ride it two ways; sitting on the set and peddling or standing on the back 'bench' and pushing yourself along like a scooter.

My second birthday

Here I am about embark on my terrible twos (not sure how terrible I actually was...I'll have to check in with my mother for clarification).

Looks like I'm ready to blow out the candles on the cake. This is a big evolutionary step from my first birthday when my parents had to point to the candle and explain that it was, in fact, my birthday.

Cool stuff given to me on my second birthday

I turned two in 1968 and I got some pretty cool gifts:

1) A big red ball (a classic)

2) A toy cash register (early training for retail employment)

3) A toy VW Van (I'll bet that would fetch a pretty penny on eBay if I still had it).

Christmas 1968

This is the Christmas mini-tree that my brother and I had in our room. It was in addition to the big tree that was in our living room (we weren't rich, just obsessed with Christmas).

There are two things that I like about this photo:
1) In the upper-left side of the photo, you can see a left-over Halloween skeleton on the wall.

2) Directly behind the Christmas tree you can see what looks like a yellow yard stick hanging on the wall. That was our 'growth chart' that my mother used to chart our growth. Each time we were measured (every three to six months), my mother would mark the yard stick with our name and the date. I really wish she had kept those growth charts.

Radio Flyer wagon

Seems all young boys had to own a red wagon at some point before they moved on up into the 'big boy' world of bicycles. Like most of my toys, I didn't have the brand name version; instead of a Radio Flyer wagon, I had a 'Red Dart' (hey, if Sears sold a cheaper version of a popular toy, that was the one I got).

Playing Dress Up at my Grandparents'

Remember when you could dress up as a Moroccan terrorist and everyone thought it was 'cute'? Ah, those were simpler, more innocent times.

And what the hell is my brother wearing? Looks like a lamp shade covered with a towel. He was the fashion-forward brother.

This photo represents one of many 'fashion shows' that my brother and I put on for my extended family whenever we visited my Grandparents. Our costumes came complements of my Grandparents' attic; a treasure trove of old clothes, furniture, wig stands, and other dust-covered artifacts. Their attic was one of the archetypal places from my childhood.

Disneyland

I grew up in Orange County so my brother and I got to go to Disneyland at least once a year. Now whenever I revisit the park I can feel all those years overlapping in my mind - all the ages I ever was rolled into one.
