Happy 100th Birthday, Boy Scouts!

Today marks the 100-year anniversary of perhaps the biggest youth organization to ever exist, The Boy Scouts of America. First incorporated by publisher W.D. Boyce in 1910, the original mission of the group was “to teach patriotism, courage, self-reliance and kindred values”. And over the past century, some 110 million boys have become Boy Scouts – wearing their uniforms with pride, taking the Scout Oath, and earning any of more than a hundred merit badges in areas such as crafts, science, outdoor activities, and even vocational training. Many a prominent adult, from entrepreneurs to astronauts, have cited the Boy Scouts as having contributed significantly to their successful careers.

I was a 4-H kid so didnt have much use for Scouts.

Happy 100th Birthday, Boy Scouts. I’m glad that I was a member with the Boys Scouts for 5 years as a second class scout and a scoutmaster for Troop 114.

Gee, from Cub to Boy to Eagle, you sure had a way to go. Sponsored by our church it seemed as if you HAD to be a Scout or burn for eternity; although, sucking an egg through a narrow tube was all I needed as encouragement.
I will never fit into it but I still posses my little Cub Scout uniform, if only to remind me that knowing how a compass works and how to make fire blows any video game out of the water.
