Hey Boo-Boo! We’re In the Movies!

Variety reports that the Hanna-Barbera classic character Yogi Bear is headed to the big screen, with some big names in talks to be attached!
Anna Faris (every “Scary Movie” installment to date), may play a documentary filmmaker visiting Jellystone Park, where apparently the bears wear neckties and only eat from neatly packed wicker pik-in-ik baskets. Dan Aykroyd(!!!) is lined up for the voice role of the bear who charts higher than the median intelligence for ursines in general, and Justin Timberlake (numerous Sony commercials) is in talks to be the voice of Yogi’s diminutive and conscience-burdened buddy, Boo-Boo.
The script is by Brad Copeland, whose former credits include episodes of “Arrested Development” and “News Radio”… we think that might be a good sign! The movie will be a combination of live action and CGI wizardry… and we don’t know what to think about that. A 3D talking bear might seem more terrifyingly freakish than the crafty scamp we remember…

Oh, great. Justin Timberlake as Boo Boo. This will go down with Flintstones and Scooby Doo. Why can’t they leave the classics alone?

To be fair, though… Timberlake is a pretty decent actor and he can be very funny. Plus, it’s a voice role… you could probably forget it’s him. That’s if he actually takes the part — it’s all in negotiations now.

Thanks for asking, Alan! Yogi Bear is a classic cartoon character, originally from the fifties, with cross-generational appeal.
The fact that a new movie featuring this classic character is being made is another example of how our culture is in love with all things retro. Other examples include, of course, the Transformers and GI Joe movies, recent re-boots of classic television shows like Battlestar Galactica, the Bionic Woman and of course just last week, V, and the upcoming batch of movies based on classic board games (Risk) and toys (ViewMaster).

I predict a lot of terrible CGI work and fart humor. In other words, it will suck, just like the other classics they’ve mangled in the past. See Garfield and The Chipmunks for example.
