Annoying Kids' Shows

Since I don't have children I don't get exposure to a lot of kids' programming. However, there are some shows that I've seen bits and pieces of that made me wince and be glad I didn't have to see/hear them on a constant basis. One that got under my skin were Dora the Explorer. Dora's voice was singsong-y and kind of pedantic (maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if a real little girl did the voice, not an adult voiceover artist). IT was also creepy how she would pause and stare out of the screen at the viewers. I liked the bilingual focus of the show but still...that voice was bad! What other kids' shows out there are bad? (It will be especially interesting hearing parents' and caregivers' responses to this post!)

Re: Annoying Kids' Shows

Dora was probably staring to be interactive with her audience.

I cannot stand Spongebob. He's an adult acting like a little kid. What an annoying cartoon. I'm surprised it lasted this long.

Re: Annoying Kids' Shows

I actually thought "That's So Raven", "The Suite Life of Zach and Cody", and "Hanna Montana" were stupid when I first watched them. I have four kids (2B & 2G). The older 3 watch them. Unfortunately, these shows have grown on me and I find myself watching them everyday with them. Sad part is, even after my wife and kids go to bed, I find myself watching them while I surf the Net. Hey, guess what's on right now? I'll give you a hint..."It's the best of both worlds..."

Shocked

Now, the "Little Einsteins", that is a different story. My oldest daughter was watching that on Saturday Morning!!! Whatever happened to cartoons just for the fun of watching them and making you laugh. Why do they have to be educational? And on Saturday Morning!? Evil or Very Mad

I also find myself watching Disney Channel shows even though my kids are in bed or otherwise occupied. Sometimes it's like a train wreck. It's so horrible, but you just can't.... look..... away......

The most annoying shows to me are the Nickelodeon cartoons. Most of them aim at the lowest form of humor, and are badly drawn to boot.

I like Phil of the Future and watch it late at night! My daughter's name is 'Kayleigh' and the other day I called her 'Keelie' and asked her how Phil was. She looked at me like I was crazy...."Who???" I told her, "Phil....you know, 'Phil of the Future'.....Phil and Keelie.....nevermind". Embarassed

Yeah, she backed away slowly.

I absolutely cannot stand "Hannah Montana"!

Oh yeah, "Phil of the Future". How could I forget? I just started watching that one w/ my kids about a month ago. I had refused up until then. And, about 2 weeks ago, it blew me away when I found out that the Vice-Principal and Curtis the Caveman were played by the same person. Even worse...I find myself listening to RadioDisney...and singing the songs...and liking the songs!!! WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO??? Shocked

Re: Annoying Kids' Shows

Dora is my two year old's best friend. Considering the alternatives: Barney, Teletubbies, Doodlebops, Boobah, Charlie and Lola... Dora's not so bad. And as someone already explained, Dora is an interactive show and fairly educational. Our daughter knows and understands several Spanish words that she wouldn't have otherwise.

I think that the tween based sitcoms on Nickelodeon and Disney are there because networks don't air a whole lot of family based programming anymore. And honestly, how different are any of those shows from shows like Silver Spoons or Punky Brewster or My Two Dads that were popular when we were that age?

Watch, fifteen years from now, nostalgia websites like this one will be full of members posting things like, "Remember when Josh from Drake and Josh was so heavy and then he lost all of that weight and turned really hot?"

Re: Annoying Kids' Shows

Personally, I think most of the kids shows on today are annoying, but among the most annoying are:

Spongebob Squarepants: What is the big fat hairy deal about this stupid show? Kids seem to think it's the greatest thing since hula hoops, but frankly I don't see it. I tried to sit thru it while I was babysitting once, but I had to leave the room.

Fairly OddParents: See above

Kim Possible: Oh please! Can children's TV get any more lame? Some kids had this on my TV once while I was babysitting at MY house. I tolerated it, but I won't again.

I notice today's kids TV has 3 trends that make shows annoying. 1) oversilliness, 2) teens and kids who just act too adult and 3) too much violence. I notice most kids can't sit thru a plotline of some old school shows and cartoons, b/c they're waiting for the quick joke, someone to say something smart, or blow something up. It's great for cartoons to be funny, but not if it's all gags and no story. Action is great, but it's not synonymous w/ violence. One cartoon that I really liked was Rescue Heroes (1/2 hr. version). It had plenty of action and excitement, kids learned something, and they actually had decent plots. And it's not bad for kids to learn something while watching TV, as long as it's not too preachy and loses the child's interest.

Seriously. If kids absolutely have to laugh all the time, then what's wrong with watching Looney Tunes? At least those are actually funny.

I absolutely hate everything the Disney Channel has become. Ugh. It makes me sick to think about.

Re: Annoying Kids' Shows

Practically all of the kid shows that come on in this day and age are pretty annoying. I can't stand them. The only cartoons that are probably non-annoying are The Batman and The Legion of Superheroes. Today's kid shows are horrible. Nothing beats the 80's kid shows.
