Two things... From early 70's
Posted: Tue Jun 26, 2007 1:33 pm Central Time
These two things have sort of bugged me for awhile now.
First:
When I was four, (1970), I got this little crate with books in it. I was learning to read then, so I carried this crate around with me. My favorite book was this little red covered book, with a picture of a little girl on it in a yellow raincoat, carrying a yellow opened umbrella, and I believe a yellow duck walked beside her. She was splashing in a puddle from the falling rain. I forget what the name of that book is, and would so love to find another one, or at least get the name of it.
Anyone know?
Second:
About the same time, or maybe I was five, I got this little tin toy at the Elks club in town when my dad took us to see Santa. I LOVED this toy. I called it my "Kitty in the shoe", but I honestly don't remember if that was it's real name or not. I drug that toy everywhere with me. It was a tin cat inside a tin shoe... It may have bopped up and down when you pulled it using it's string behind you. Anyone ever see one, or know what toy I mean?
Thank you in advance! |

That book sounds familiar.... but I haven't been able to figure out what it would be. I liked one called Johnny Lion's Rubber Boots by Edith Thatcher Hurd . What do you mean by "crate" … does that mean a box that the books slipped into (like "Four Frogs in a Box" by Mercer Mayer). Were they mini-books? The one that I am thinking of was hardcover and kind of oddly shaped… skinnier when looking staight at it then most books. There are a lot of children's books with a little girl in the rain on the cover. Was it a photo-cover?
The kitty in a show motif is popular for its cuteness…. sometimes it is a literal "Puss in Boot" object. Looking at various sites. Most of the objects are figurines that kids wouldn't normally play with. I haven't seen any ones made of tin yet though. Most of those pull-toys were made of wood… not tin. Was it like an old fashioned flat and tall tin cat with wheels? |

The crate was a wooden box, almost like an open topped toolbox... I think.... and the cover was a drawing not a photo...
No, the toy wasn't flat and thin.... sort of like the wooden toys on a pull string only it was tin... _________________ "If Jimmy cracked corn, and no one cared, why is there a song about it?" |
