Favorite Steve Perry Era Journey Album

The Steve Perry post inspired me to post this...What is your favorite Steve Perry era Journey album???

Mine would be the 1981 album "Escape", because many of its songs received a lot of airplay during late 1981 and 1982, and I would say that album also spawned the most hits, such as "Who's Crying Now", "Stone In Love", "Don't Stop Believin'", "Open Arms" and "Still They Ride". Even a couple of the songs can almost pass as metal and hard rock, such as "Keep On Runnin'" and the title track, "Escape". It is one of those albums, where whether in the car or at home, you want to put in your CD player and crank up the volume! A few other favorite Steve Perry era Journey hits from other albums include "Chain Reaction" from the 1983 album "Frontiers", "Only The Young" from the 1985 soundtrack "Vision Quest" and "Feeling That Way/Anytime" from the 1978 album "Infinity".

"Escape" is a great album, but my pick would have to be "Trial By Fire". I thought it was a great album.

Re: Favorite Steve Perry Era Journey Album

I feel that Steve Perry is a cold, calculating, manipulative man and "sensitive singer" image he projects is just so much spin.

With that being said, he's certainly a capable lyricist and songwriting partner in addition to his singing skills.  My favorite SP era Journey album is "Raised on Radio".  Randy Jackson kicked the bass playing up a notch, and was able to carry fourth or fifth part to harmony vocals with ease.

What have you seen or heard to make you think such a thing?

Not that I'm not a fan of Steve Perry's time with Journey, but he actually co-wrote alot of Journey's songs with my fave Journey member keyboardist Jonathan Cain.

For me, it's a tie between Escape and Frontiers. I like their earlier material as well.

In the '80s, I was always reading music industry rags, and the impressions from fellow Journey members about Steve P. were always favorable from a professional standpoint, but they clearly didn't hang out with the guy in their spare time.  He was the only member of the band that had little or nothing said about him in terms of friendship.

The "Behind the Music" about Journey revealed a lot about his nature, and his motivation.  He never spoke in terms of art, creativity, friendship, pleasing the fans, or anything else that a personally involved musician would normally discuss.

No, he spoke only in terms of how to drive the band's success, album sales, lucrative tours, whom in the band he felt able to work with, etc.  The impression he left was far beyond him being professional.  His focus on controlling Journey and making money left me thinking he's an awfully cold fish.

His ex-bandmates seem to feel the same.  He gets his royalties, but they still refuse to speak to him.

That's not true... In 2005 the entire line up (past and present) got together when Journey got a start on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

Here's the write up from Rolling Stone:

Former Journey vocalist Steve Perry shocked his old bandmates and thousands of fans gathered in Los Angeles Friday when he showed up to the unveiling of the band's star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

"I knew nothing about it, and nobody else knew [anything] about it," says guitarist Neal Schon. "We walked from the back to the front, where all the people were, and there he was. That's the first time we've seen -- or spoken to -- each other in about seven years."

Formed in 1973, Journey achieved their greatest success after Perry joined in 1977, when his soaring voice helped push the group's power ballads like "Don't Stop Believing," "Open Arms" and "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" up the charts, before the group disbanded in the mid-Eighties. Though Journey reunited in 1996, a corresponding tour became the source of controversy when Perry was diagnosed with a degenerative hip disease and the band replaced him with Steve Augeri.

Friday's reunion was spawned by Journey's Thursday morning appearance on L.A. radio station KLOS's Mark and Brian Show. "[The Djs asked], 'Is Steve gonna be there?' live on the radio," says Schon. "I said, 'You guys got his number? Let's call him and invite him!' So they proceeded to try and get through to him, which we were not able to do. In the end, Mark acted like he was Steve Perry, so I said, 'I'm personally inviting you. You need to be there. You had a lot to do with this.' And, apparently, Steve heard it when he was driving on the freeway."

Journey were also reunited with former vocalist Robert Fleischman, and ex-drummers Steve Smith and Aynsley Dunbar, who turned up for the ceremony and later jammed with the band at a House of Blues gig Friday night. Though Perry didn't make it to the performance, Schon hopes their brief reunion last Friday may have helped mend some fences. "I'm hoping everyone can put behind them all the ill feelings, for whatever reason, and just move on," he says. "Life is too short -- you need to get on with it. If you have problems, build a bridge and get over it. That's exactly where I'm at, and so I'm hoping this is the beginning of a better relationship between Perry and ourselves."

Journey are currently working on a new album with producers Kevin Elson and Mike Frasier. The band plan to give out the as-yet-untitled release to attendees of their upcoming summer tour, which will be billed as "An Evening with Journey" and sponsored by Clear Channel.

Friday's reunion may strengthen the lineup for the lengthy outing. "We're going to be able to play so much more material from the beginning, pre-Steve Perry days, and move on. We're probably going to end up doing a three-and-a-half-hour show, so I've invited all the past members to come and sit in -- including Steve Perry. We'll just have to wait and see if he shows."
