He was an actual stagehand on the show and Chuck Barris saw him dancing without moving his feet much and thought he would be a funny time-filler in case the show's taping runs short. Gene had his legs amputated from diabetic complications. He appeared in his wheelchair in the Chuck Barris biography movie "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind." _________________ "Over one thousand served"

I was very annoyed by Chuck Barris' lips, though; he always looked like he was wearing Maybelline Kissing Potion.

Those guys who get on the floor and do, The Worm. And that guy who'd play either a snake horn, xylophone, or trombone, and keeps saying, "I'm gonna play my trombone", and the crowd keeps shouting, "What are you gonna do?" But when he finally starts to play the instrument, it falls apart.
