So, nobody since the demise of the Three Stooges has been able to poke another person in the eyes or bonk them on the head with a mallet?

This is not a movie biography about the team..it's an attemp to
recreate their comedy and it will not work.

I was talking about the cartoon part first.
Afterwards I mentioned the movie and how they can't acquire the true essence of what the stooges were.

view Not the same way. The Stooges were those onscreen characters.
I suppose others can be as "slapstick" as they were, but the essence is not the same. Michel Richards was good at the slapstick moments in Seinfeld. Various others are also good in parts of slapstick. Ben Stiller in "Something about Mary" was very good at it, but it was only a small part of what he did. Funny but a small part. _________________

And yet, someone connected to the Three Stooges in some way must think this is a good idea.
Films like this do not exist in a vacuum. One cannot just decide he is going to make a remake, or re-imagining, or whatever this qualifies as, and go ahead and do it. There are rights to be obtained first. Someone probably owns the trademark "The Three Stooges". Since the fictional characters of Moe, Larry, Curly and/or Shemp are named for the actors who played them, one would think their heirs have some control over their use.
In any event, the original Three Stooges shorts are now being released in better versions than ever on DVD, in a chronological sequence that currently spans 12 years in four volumes. Nothing the Farrelly Brothers or anyone else can do with the characters or the concept can ever diminish the appeal of the true classics which have provided the nyuks and the yuks for over 60 years.
Remakes may be, at best, unnecessary, but I have yet to see one that ruins the enjoyment of the original. _________________ "Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." -- Ferris Bueller

Dear Tom,
The rights to"The Three Stooges"are currently owned by
"Comedy Three Productions Inc."..which are owned and operated
by Larry Fine's Grandkids and by "Curly Joe"De Rita's step sons:
The Benjamin Brothers.
I doubt that they would give permission to allow this film to
be done..unless?
They get paid alot of monies for it..and they have some involvement
in it.
Which is not saying alot of positive things about this film.
The Benjamin Brothers and the other heads of "Comedy 3 Prods"
were involved with that lousey"Three Stooges"TV Movie bio on ABC TV
in 2000.
So..my advice to real "Three Stooges"fans is this?
Stick to watching the boys' films on the new DVD sets and forget about
this abombination from the Fartelly Brothers(If they ever produce and release
this un original, unfunny and stupid piece of &*!#)to the masses.
Kevin S.Butler Formerley"Nostalgia TV!".
P.S. I have four of the dvd sets of the boys' shorts and I enjoy watching
them. |

To answer Eeyore's and Hulk's question about
others trying to do "The Three Stooges"slapstick or
slapstick in general?
I've seen Mr.Richards trying to perform slapstick on"Seinfeld" and he
was not funny..neither was Mr.Mel Gibson in the"Lethal Weapon"
film craps!
Even Mr.Martin Short as"Ed Grimley",Mr.Robin Williams
and Mr.Rick Moranis couldn't do any of the slapstick as well
as "The Three Stooges",L&H,A&C,Soupy Sales Etc.
The only ones who could and did do slapstick creativley and
successfully are?
Mr.Rowan Atkinson(as"Mr.Bean"),Mr.John Candy ,Mr.Benny Hill
and Messers:Mark Linn Baker and Brosnon Pinchot on"Perfect Strangers".
Everyone else?
Forget It!
They don't know how to make it look real and funny..that's why
no one knows how to do slapstick properly anymore and this new
"Three Stooges"movie will still do very poorily presented ideas of
slapstick.

From www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php
Executive Producer Earl Benjamin is equally thrilled by the prospect of a contemporary take, "Now is the perfect time for The Three Stooges to return, we can't wait for family members of all ages to enjoy the fun together, and these days everybody needs a laugh."
Executive vice president of production Cale Boyter and vice president of production Luke Ryan are overseeing the project for MGM. Bobby and Peter Farrelly are producing with Bradley Thomas and Charlie Wessler. Earl Benjamin and Robert Benjamin of C3 Entertainment are serving as executive producers. As casting gets underway the filmmakers are targeting a release date of November 20th, 2009.
So, if family members are not only involved, but excited about the idea of this movie, shouldn't that count for something?

Yes, I use it all the time! I also say "foodstuffs" quite often too. Mainly because they are ridiculous words!
I don't see where they said that family members of the original Stooges are involved. My interpretation of Benjamin's statement is that he's referring to movie-goers of all ages.
Oh and by the way....in my opinion, just because a family member of or the originator themself approves of something being remade, it doesn't make it a good idea or mean that I have to like it. |

I couldn't agree more.
If they want to bring back slapstick in a contemporary way, fine, do it, but call it something else. Why re-do the Three Stooges?
Personally, I predict this to do as well as The New Monkees did. _________________ "I couldn't feel any better or I'd be sick' - Dean Martin

Unfortuneatley..Kellykoop,
Greedy and stupid producers like The Farellys and The
Benjamin Brothers think that they can recreate:"The Three Stooges'"
type of comedy with someone else.
And present to moviegoers..who don't realize that no one can
recreate such unique characters and slapstick.
They also feel that if it's "Stoogelike"comedy..they need to use
the team's name to make monies off of it.
If you've seen the ABC TV movie bio about the boys and how poorily
that film was done?
Then..it should give you and the other users of this website..at least
those who know how incompetent and greedy and stupid such persons as
this really are.
You can tell that this movie will never be the hit that everyone is
anticipating it to be.

Not to throw gas on the fire, but exactly who is anticipating this movie will be a hit? I think you're reading way more into it than what actually exists. This film is barely in pre-production, what's to say that it'll even get made? Do you know how many movies fall apart in this stage?
Good gravy, look at how many films and other projects people here have freaked out about because there was a report that someone was trying to re-make something but it never went anywhere. I'm just saying that it seems like a whole lot of energy is being wasted on getting about upset about something that there's a good chance will never happen in the first place. Why not just wait and see? |
