MAC AND ME - who loves it?
Posted: Mon Mar 19, 2007 12:10 pm Central Time
This E.T. ripoff from 1988 recently won me over. A friend recommended it for its blatant product placement for Coca-Cola and McDonalds (who both helped fund this flick). There is so much Coke in this movie I thought I was watching BLOW. Seriously, if someone started a drinking game where you had to drink Coke every time it was onscreen, your teeth would rot out before the 90 minutes were up. What were they thinking?
I will say that I like the alien designs better than the horrificly ugly E.T., even if these aliens do look like Imogene Coca in NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION. I will also give the production credit for casting a real boy in a wheelchair in the lead. I will give them a hug and kiss for throwing said boy off a cliff (a clip Paul Rudd shows on Conan O'Brien all the time). Again, what in the world were they thinking?
So, any other fans of this one out there?
Here are a few MAC AND ME links for the faithful.

Because I was such a die hard ET fan, I wasn't all that interested in Mac and Me when it was originally released. Now it seems to have all but disappeared into obscurity. But after seeing that Alien parody trailer, wow... there's so much awesome badness, I'm gonna have to try and track it down. Was that really a dance number in McDonald's? A dance number?
Thanks for sharing! |

Indeed there is a dance number at McDonalds that starts for no apparant reason. It is just the happiest McDonalds on earth. Definitely check MAC AND ME out. It is so cold and calculated that it becomes amazingly fun. |

E.T. was slow paced, lethargic, and somewhat of an inept script.
I remember Mac and Me. Rip-off or not, it was more entertaining than E.T. _________________ http://www.top40db.net/ |

You're kidding! This is nothing but a hilariously awful rip-off of the superior "E.T." and nothing more then a balant big commercial for Mcdonald's and Coca-Cola but worth seeing if your into MST3K like me. |

Hahaha...I remember going to the movies that summer with my cousin to see an equally HORRIBLE movie, "Hot to Trot" and when we got to the theater we saw all the posters and cardboard cut-outs for "Mac and Me" and we all exclaimed "Awwwwe! Let's see Mac and Me instead!!!" And our parents were all, "No! You two begged to see "Hot To Trot" so that's what we're seeing!"
About a year or two later (when I was way too old for it) I finally saw "Mac and Me" on video and discovered I hadn't missed much. I think my friend and I talked through the whole thing because it was so bad and I actually remember being VERY hungry for McDonalds when it was over. |

oh god...mac and me...possibly one of the worst movies I have seen lol. the part I remember most is the kid in the wheel chair falling down the cliff. It's been a long time since I saw it though, so I didn't notice the excessive use of coke and mcdonalds in it, I never knew they funded the film. I would not watch this movie again though. |

Mac and Me seems to be in the same league as Second Sight. Everybody knows they're bad movies, but we all want to see them anyway! |

I remember my nephew used to like this movie - but I don't remember him talking about a boy in a wheelchair going over a cliff....
I'll have to try to find it now!!! Maybe he still has it on VHS...

Internet Movie Database trivia:
- The scenes of Mac running from the backyard into the hills were filmed in Hacienda Heights, California.
-
- Coca Cola and McDonalds backed the movie, thus the numerous references to both of those products.
-
- This film ends with a freeze frame and the superimposed title "We'll be back!" But it proved to be such a dismal box office failure that its proposed sequel never got made.
- The scenes in the McDonalds were all shot in City of Industry in California (just outside Los Angeles). The set was an actual McDonalds that was built specifically for filming television commercials and for crew member training. It has never been open to the public! When McDonalds (or movies, etc.) isn't using the location for filming, it is locked up behind a chain link fence. Everything works in the restaurant, but from its construction until it was torn down it never served a single paying customer.
-
- This film is listed among The 100 Most Amusingly Bad Movies Ever Made in Golden Raspberry Award founder John Wilson's book THE OFFICIAL RAZZIE® MOVIE GUIDE.
Haven't seen it yet. For McDonald's history fans and memorabilia collectors, it could be something of interest. _________________ "Over one thousand served" |

it's funny how it seems almost EVERYONE hates this movie, only like 2 more people I know like it, but I always liked it, it is very cheesy, but I don't care. LOL @ the people saying they like it more than E.T. |
