Voter ID required

The passage of a bill here in Texas looks certain, requiring voters show photo ID before being allowed to cast a ballot. I am personally in favor of this. How about you all ? Great idea ? Think it is bad or at least unnecessary ? Discuss. |

Unnecessary and potentially unconstitutional. What do you do for people who don't drive, like the elderly and poor folks who ride the bus? You can say they can get a state ID, but how are you going to get them there?
It's been a big deal in Wisconsin because the Republicans were convinced that after all the effort they put into getting W elected here in 2000 and 2004, the only way they could have lost by such a close margin (less than 1/2 a percentage point in 2000 and less than 1 percent in '04) was through vote fraud.
But then Obama carried the state by 6 points and it kinda put that little conspiracy theory to rest...
And doesn't this belong on the debate board? _________________

I think it's a good idea so we know all folks voting are legal citizens. And if you are too poor to even have a state I.D. then one will be provided for you. |

Yeah, but how? Is the state going to come around to every home to make sure someone has one?
It's a nice idea, but voting is a constitutionally guaranteed basic right.
All this ID stuff is just capitalizing on suspicions about folks who aren't white. _________________

It's not a debate, dear. It's just a statement of fact that asks afterwards for an opinion. I'm not arguing it-I just wondered what everyone else thought. If the mods want to move it to the debate board, they can. I don't mind. |

I'm not concerned about someone's color....just their legal right to vote in this country. |

Remember how a few months back you said, "Once again, GH, you are right " because, of course, I was?
Well, it's time to say it again now. _________________
