What movie would you remake?
Posted: Sat Mar 28, 2009 8:22 am Central Time
The last few years we have seen many movies re-made or "re-invented". Movies like "Batman Begins," "Casino Royale," and the upcoming "Star Trek" were/looks great. Other movies like "Speed Racer" or "the Poseidon Adventure" were misses. I hear they are re-doing "the Karate Kid" with Jackie Chan in the Mr. Miyagi role. What movie would you remake or re-invent?
I would like to see:
Westworld
Logan's Run
Godzilla (done right) |

Superman Returns Definitely!! Bryan Singer screwed up the entire movie. I would definitely remake that terrible movie, treating it like it never was. WB seems to be doing this, let us hope they do. |

1) "Howard the Duck" -- with today's technology, they could create a much more believable cigar-smoking, talking duck than George Lucas's team did in the '80s (although for some reason, I had no problem with the character portrayal myself). I'd go back to the original source material -- possibly including the original "Man-Thing" story if the rights were available. My only regret is that Howard's creator Steve Gerber (may he RIP) is not availble to write or consult on the script, but I'm sure someone coukd capture his bizarre sense of humor and social commentary, which were lacking in the movie that I always thought was trying too hard to be a Ghostbusters-style comedy-adventure.
2) "Man of La Mancha" -- the original was a disappointment due to a cast selected more for star power than for musical ability. I'd find the best performers suited for the roles (I'm seeing Nathan Lane as Sancho Panza, perhaps) and put the emphasis on the music. (Or maybe this is just an "Impossible Dream"?) _________________ "Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." -- Ferris Bueller

I agree with you about Howard The Duck, I loved that movie as a kid. An updated version could turn out very cool.... Just too bad Lea Thompson isn't still that age so she could run around in the skimpy clothing again.
I would probably do an updated version of Ghostbusters, and make it much darker than the original. _________________ www.hauntingheather.com

Super Mario Bros.- I'd actually do it right. It wouldn't be a comedic drama with Mario elements. It'd actually reference as many Mario games as possible.
Peach is, as always, kidnapped by Bowser and taken to his castle, guarded by the usual enemies: dry bones, thwomps, etc. Mario and Luigi, as always, manage to use their superpowers (fireballs, etc) to thwart these enemies and get to Bowser to defeat him. After his defeat, Bowser is skulking in his room wondering what to do, when Kammy Koopa tells him that she can disguise herself as Mario and trick Peach back into the fortress. She does this, and once Peach realizes she's be tricked again, she attempts escape. Kammy has a backup plan for this, and teleports the castle into none other than the fourth dimension.
Once Mario and Luigi get to Bowser's fortress, it's gone. Toad, the usual witness to such events, informs them that they've been zapped into thin air. Interestingly, a portal not unlike those in Partners In Time is discovered nearby. Mario & Luigi enter it and find themselves also in the fourth dimension.
And that's how it starts. _________________ Oh Gloria, with hair like granite. |

Some movies based on children's lit:
A remake/readaptation of the children's film Stuart Little, based on E.B. White's classic, making it more faithful to the book, including Margalo (the bird) and focusing on Stu's quest for her and ending the movie with him resuming the search.
Definitely Trumpet of the Swan ---E.B. White's most enchanting, lyrical children's book. At least somebody should remake/readapt that waste of ink and paint. That was just horrible. I was very displeased after watching that.
As much as I enjoy Chuck Jones' Cricket In Times Square cartoons, a full-length version of George Selden's engaging story about the musically-talented bug who, with the help of the unlikely duo of a cat and mouse, bring success to a near-bankrupt newsstand.
Russell and Lillian Hoban's The Mouse and His Child--I'd make it darker like the book and also have more of the wry humor and the philosophical aspects that the book had. Also the ending wouldn't be so rushed like the first movie was. |

Remake the classic cartoon movies, with better budgets. De-emphasize comedy and focus on actual coherence to the cartoon. _________________ Oh Gloria, with hair like granite. |

To veer away from cartoons for a moment - I wouldn't mind seeing a remade version of What's Up Doc? _________________ Wake up and smell the coffee, Mrs. Bueller. It's a fool's paradise. |

Flowers In The Attic.
I would follow the book to the letter, including elements of Garden Of Shadows.
It would be a twelve hour miniseries, in the vein of The Thorn Birds.
A remake is actually in the works. Hopefully they'll get it right this time. |
