On the topic of spammers...
Posted: Thu Jun 11, 2009 9:47 pm Central Time
While I was out of the office for basically all of May, we somehow got an enormous amount of new members who are here primarily to spam.
We are trying our best to resolve this now, but there are literally hundreds of users I need to ban by hand and it will take some time.
I appreciate your patience while I try to resolve the problem as quickly as possible. |

I do believe you and glad it's being addressed. If you find out where they live I'll go pay them a visit and smash their kneecaps. |

Thank you. I was considering leaving Retroland due to the spammers. However, knowing that you're working to ban all the spammers, I think I'll stay. _________________ Oh Gloria, with hair like granite. |

I'm not defending the spammers by any means, but I fail to see why anyone would want to leave Retroland because of them. They are at worst a minor nuisance, easily ignored in most cases unless one chooses to seek out their profiles. Very few have bothered to post to the discussion boards, and even those that do usually post inane comments with a link to their sites as a signature.
To be honest, I find the posting practices of some the regulars to be more of an annoyance than the spammers, and if I chose to leave Retroland, if would be because some of them get out of hand, not because some idiot chooses to create a "bio" about colon cleansers or tumescent liposuction.
Until The Powers That Be manage to rid us of spammers, the best strategy is just to ignore them, and don't give them the attention they crave. _________________ "Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." -- Ferris Bueller

I think that some of the problems that a lot of people have with spammers, Tom, is not that they are really disrupting the boards, but that their presence imply that TPTB do not care. The concern we have is wondering if we are seeing the same symptoms that resulted in the fall of YL. Now, TPTB insist that is not true, and have promised to clean up the spammers problem as best they can.
You are right though Tom that most of the spammers are just a very minor problem. As I've said on another page, if they register and just post a link on their homepage to the product or products, the only way you're ever even going to know about it is by clicking on the newest member link. Once a newer individual registers that original spammer is lost in the vast database of RL members. This database is searchable by name, but not by chronology of when people registered or anything like that. You probably can't even find the spammer if you wanted to - unless you know their user name. In other words, it's a pretty poor way of advertising.
The only exceptions are spammers who actually post on one of the Retrotalk bonds. Those that do, come into plain sight and are subject not only to being identified and banned by TPTB, but to all the abuse that the rest of us can throw at them. Some bogus "interest" in their products by responding to their pitches with fake names, and fake credit cards can't hurt either. I used to get perverse pleasure when telemarketers were more prevelant by leading them on wild goose chases. |
