Swensen's
Posted: Thu Apr 30, 2009 10:12 am Central Time
There used to be a Swensen's Ice Cream shop here in Osage Beach but has long since closed. They had the best sundaes I've ever had. Have any of you ever heard of Swensen's? I looked online and the nearest on for me is Topeka KS. |

Back in the early to mid 80s, we had a Swensen's for a few years, located in Federal Way, Washington. I vaguely remember the place, but I do remember they had great sundaes with the little wedge-shaped cookies. It was neat having a real ice cream parlor while it lasted. I didn't realize they were still around. |

We had one here in Ft Worth. I used to love their ice cream sodas, phosphates and sasparilla. |

GREAT place. Their frozen desserts were yummy and their main-course-type food was tasty too (They had great burgers which were a fave of mine before I became a vegetarian at 20). They made yummy flavored soft drinks too (Vanilla cokes! Yum to the nth power). I used to go there with my college sweetheart |

In my part of the world, Swensen's played a distant second to Farrell's. But, I liked Swensen's too although I never actually set foot in the South Bay's sole branch until frosh year of college. I just drove by the long-closed location a few days ago and sadly the building that once housed it was freshly rubbled. |

Oh wow, Swensen's was THE place to go for birthday ice cream when I was a kid! Long gone, of course, but Loard's (a local ice cream chain along similar lines) is still around:

"[T]he South Bay's sole branch"? Verily, I say thee nay.
I can think of at least 3, just off the top of my head: There was one in Westwood, just south of UCLA, there was another in Manhatten Beach (or maybe it was Hermosa Beach) on Sepulveda Blvd., and there was yet another in the Town & Country Mall in Rolling Hills Estates. Are you thinking of a fourth? I don't think any of the places I mentioned is currently in a state of rubble.
I think the original was the one in 'Frisco, which still stands. |

But, I stand fully corrected on the Sepulveda branch and I totally slep on the old T&C Mall! Yep, the one to which I was referring was on the 'Shaw and Redondo Beach Blvd. near El Camino Coll. |

I guess I tend to think of places that were in easy driving distance as being in the "South Bay" but, now that you mention it, I concede that Westwood is a shade too far afield.
I didn't know there had been a Swensen's down by El Camino College. Given the time I spent @ Geoffrey's Comics across the street, I can't believe I missed it.
