I think American Idol is jumping the shark as we speak.
Rock of Love jumped the shark when it went on a bus...haha
Katie Couric jumped the shark when she went to CBS.

Yeah, although the boring contest of the "Davids" last season had the shark circling...
Hiring obnoxious Cara definitely sailed "Idol" over the shark, Pooka!
Some of my own-
Home Improvement: Brad goes to college
Will and Grace: Day One
Scooby-Doo: Scrappy-Doo
Three's Company: Chrissy calls in at end of shows
Brady Bunch: Oliver
Night Stalker: trying to redo it with some new young guy. The role was DEFINED by Darren McGavin!
SNL: the crew with Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, etc. gradually filters away. Hasn't been funny in about 15 years!

Fantasy Island...Exit stage left, Tattoo.
Battle Star Galactica...enter Oliver from the Brady Bunch, or who ever the kid was, to lead the ship...exit Starbuck.

Here's my list:
Crystal Pepsi: ya had to go citrus, didn'tcha?!
Murphy Brown: Grant Shaud. Need I say more??
WRNO-FM 99.5, New Orleans: Dateline: 1991--Z-Rock doomed 99-And-A-Half to failure. It's currently Rush Radio.
WCBS-FM 101.1, New York: Dateline: 2005--let's say the station just didn't amount to Jack.
Spider-Man 3: RIP Harry Osborn.
Beverly Hills Cop III: RIP Doug Todd (Axel's boss). And Wonderworld?? Just didn't seem to fit to me; everything that could go wrong did here. Just about ruined any possibility for a BHC IV.
Another 48 Hrs: making Ben Kehoe (the late Brion James) a heavy. How he agreed to this I'll never understand...
The New Adventures Of Batman: Batman And The Super 7. Chopped up versions of NAOB and served up weekly on NBC as 10-minute 2-parters?! Who stepped in that?!
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures - The Animated Series: the series most non-non-non-non-nonheinous decision to switch companies from Hanna-Barbera to DIC for its second season in 1991-2 (along with the transition from CBS to Fox). All the magic H-B gave the cartoon was lost. Bogus!

Good ones, Pooka, although admittedly, I've yet to see an episode of AI this season. Discovery Channel jumps the shark practically every other day.
Seriously speaking, here's a few more:
Real World (MTV) - Actually JTS so long ago, it's now on it's 3rd jump.
Fantasy Island (ABC) - When Mr. Rourke went toe-to-toe with satan himself.
network news. - Almost hate to say it since it's where I first worked but, how relevant are the half hour daily newscasts in the face of 24 Hour newschannels and the web?
The entire "finding a D-lister Love" scripted-reality format on Vh-1. - Seriously, beyond Brett Michaels -- and I agree, Pooka, he's done like a charred steak -- who the heck are these people and why do they deserve a show??!!
Survivor - Isn't "jumping the shark" an actual challenge on the show?
Lost - I don't watch it but, friends who do say that the show's title is an apt description of its plotline ... for the past two seasons.
Heroes - Zeros. |

Just thought up a couple more:
Popeye And Son: Popeye and Olive Oyl don't quite gel as parents. Nor does Bluto as a single dad.
Cocoa Puffs: Oh the lack of humanity! Sonny The Cuckoo Bird ditches his sweater and goes au naturel! Why?!!!!!!
Match Game 77: Ah, the shortsighted folks of good vision in the Daytime Scheduling Dept. at The Eye Network (CBS), whose infinite wisdom to switch MG77 from its snug timeslot in the afternoon to the morning after The Price Is Right doomed it to a rapid decline in viewership. The subsequent restoration of the game to the afternoon, and the addition of The Star Wheel and the new set in '78 did little to bolster its plummeting popularity. Another tragic example of fixing something that ain't broke...

Wow....I have not been on this site in ages! May as well chime in here on this topic.
*"The Dukes of Hazzard" When the "replacement Duke Boys" arrived to cover for Wopat and Schnieder while they sat out a season during a contract dispute. Once they returned, the show went from a fun action filled car chase based show, to a "let's see what the General Lee will jump next". The show became a glorified kids show. They may as well jumped a shark tank in the orange Charger!
*"The Puppy's Further Adventures" (cartoon) This show originally aired as a series of TV specials in the late 70's. Eventually it became a regular series, as a second segment to "Scooby Doo". The show featured a lost puppy searching the world for his owner, aided by a group of fellow canines. The series was well written, had story lines that appealed to all ages, and played more of a drama/adventure series.
Enter Glyder the Misfit Pup.
The writers decided to wrap up the world search storyline with a very rare (for cartoon) season finale, which many fans of the show consider it to be the best episode. Unfortunatly the next season featured Petey reunited with his owner and engaging in new adventures as well as including a new character....a puppy with ears so large he could fly....a complete ripoff of Disney's Dumbo. The show...once a serial drama, became a goofy preschool age level cartoon, which alienated the older kid/teen/adult fanbase. The show dwindled away to nothing not long after, relying on repeats from the first seasons before calling its quits. This show didn't need to jump the shark....the big eared pup simply had to glide over it!
*ER.....The show jumped when Clooney left. The writing became stupid, (football team brawls in the hospital???? COME ON!!!) with much of the medical drama being surpassed by which doctor was sleeping with who? The show continued to jump with each original cast member jumping ship. The final straw was how many ways can one doctor get maimed by a helicopter. The show ends its run in a few weeks, simply because it is running out of aquatic life to try and jump over!

All in the Family was not All in the Family anymore when Mike and Gloria left. Archie had no one to insult anymore. |

Just thought of a couple more:
Laverne & Shirley: Paramount sure wasn't accommodating to Cindy Williams when she had one in the oven!
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - Season 3 (1966-1967) -- You know, maybe changing the show's direction to make it Batman-campy wasn't such a hot idea after all. |

'jumptheshark.com' was my favorite site back in the '90s... Too bad it became shark food. Gobbled up by TV guide... |

Another JTS item just popped into my head:
South Park: Oh my God, they killed Kenny...off the show! You B*$@&#%S!
Kenny McCormick was practically the glue that held the show together. So it would be natural that the show take a nosedive when the producers mistakenly eliminated Kenny after running out of "They Killed Kenny!" gimmicks; he's since returned, but they toned down the "killing Kenny" cliche. |
