A cross between a DVR and iTunes

I swear there should be a DVR that acts also like iTunes. That is, you upload your DVDs onto it and create playlists (or channels, etc). You could also download shows not on DVD sets. When you upload movies, you can set it up to have a cartoon open the film (e.g. Tom & Jerry opens an MGM film).

It's called AppleTV. It'll download and rent movies as well as load up any movies converted from DVD on your computer.

What I was hoping for is a way to upload DVDs and create playlists so you can watch different shows without having to change discs.

I made one of those using Linux platform and a generic ATI card (does DVI/Component/Composite out)...  Lots of IR/UHF remote options out there, and you can also get a 'network media player'  and only use a little STB (WiFi or ethernet)

You can add as many TB's of storage you want over USB...

It's called Apple TV. In addition to rentals, it syncs to your computer where you can rip your DVDs, store them and create playlists.

Apple TV is DRM crippled proprietary junk. It may work, but like everything Apple, it's in 'jail'... They control how you use it, what it will play on, and how it will look when it displays.

I'd recommend building your own and using free software. It takea a little effort, but if done proplerly will work MUCH BETTER and you can actually CUSTOMIZE the display! Not to mention, it will work with any TV you have!! Don't let the Apple tyrants take over your TV set!

Apple TV went to great lengths to lock you out of every inch of the system. They control it right up to the pixel on the display. Take back control of your TV set! Say "No" to DRM and HDCP! (and systems like Apple TV)
