Goodbye old friend
Posted: Fri Oct 16, 2009 10:20 pm Central Time

We've had a vacuum just like this one as long as I can remember. It's a 70s model Electrolux, and still works well. However, it sat in the closet for many years after we got our Hoover. We just recently bought another vacuum, and I'm afraid we'll have to sell this one. _________________ Oh Gloria, with hair like granite. |

Why do you have to sell it? Was the new one THAT expensive? _________________ www.hauntingheather.com

We have no real plans, but we may end up selling it. Three vacuums is too many. _________________ Oh Gloria, with hair like granite. |

The bags are getting harder to find. I had to go across town and by a crate of them from the only dealer left in the city.
Are there still door to door vacuum cleaner salesmen out there? _________________

That's quite the awesome dinosaur of a vacuum! Did you ever ride it when you were little? My grandma had a similar one and hoo boy... it never had much speed, but it sure made for a great pretend rocket when I was five. |

My mom had a Sears model of a similar design. I used to pretend that it was a Brontosaurus. _________________ Zombies, man. They creep me out. |

My mom and dad still have that exact vacuum (even same color). I was in elementary school when they bought it. I remember the salesman coming to the house and sucking up huge ball bearings to prove it's power.
We also bought the matching carpet shampooer, which looks like a giant Norelco razor. |

It's amazing how stuff from that time was built to LAST. A modern vacuum cleaner can't be expected to last more than 7 years at best, without looking beaten all to heck. I hate how cheaply everything is made now. I'd gladly pay more for an item if I knew its life expectancy would be as long as the products of yesteryear. _________________ Zombies, man. My parents had that same vaccuum, except it was all grey (light grey and dark grey). Anyway, they kept it until I was eleven or twelve or so, and then it just stopped working......which is understandable, because I think they bought it before I was born. |

Ours is tan and bronze colored. No, I never rode it LOL. I did, however, play a lot with the retractable cord. _________________ Oh Gloria, with hair like granite.

Up until about 5years ago we had the old Kirby upright that my parents bought sometime in the early '60's. It looked similar to this model.

It worked like a charm except it sounded like a jet engine was running. Finally the bearings gave out and we tried to have it fixed. The only vacuum repair guy we could find wanted $300 to "re-build" it, so we scrapped it and bought a Eureka for $129. That POS only lasted three years. They don't make 'em like they used to. Now I wish I'd paid the guy the $300. _________________

I found a picture of the post-war Electrolux my mom used til the early '60's. I don't know the model number but it had the metal runners instead of wheels, the "snake skin" patterned hose, and the "saloon-doors" opening where the hose attached.
The whole vacuum cleaner looked so cool my mom used to let me play with it since I enjoyed turning it into Buck Roger's spaceship!
