The best cars of your generation

Looking back at the last ten years, we've definitely seen a resurgence of uniquely designed cars. Ten years ago, every car looked alike save for exotics and the New Beetle. Nowadays, cars are coming out that are easily recognizable. One of my favorites is the Ford Flex. What was the inspiration for that thing?

A cardboard box?

My nephew and his wife were visiting from out of state over the summer and the car the rental place had given them was a Ford Flex.  When I saw it my first reaction was, "That is the ugliest dang thing I've seen in a long time!"  It's so square and boxy...no style or flare to it at all!

The inspiration for the Ford Flex was to replace the Expedition with a "new-age" wagon, lower to the ground, based on the Ford Fairlane 500 concept car.

The Flex gives you all the room of the Expedition in a lot lower vehicle that feels more like a big car instead of a big truck. Pretty? . . . no, but Ford needs to get back into the car business.

My generation was defined by the largest cars in Ford Motor Company history!

When the all new Fords and Mercurys for 1971 were introduced, they were the equals to the Lincoln Continental in size and luxury. At the time, I was a car crazy junior high school guy. But I truly didn't see these monster Fords coming. To match the new size, these cars set a new standard in car interiors - the high-back "Twin-Comfort Lounge Seats".  Split 50/50 with available 6-way power adjustment on both sides plus a passenger side recliner; I'm talking livingroom on wheels here. GM lost a lot of customers to these Fords in the early '70's, and all it took was a single test drive.

When our neighbor drove by in his new 1972 Mercury Marquis Brougham to give us all a ride, my dad's Oldsmobile Delta 88 seemed more like a buckboard compared to that Mercury! I'm guessing that we will never see cars like these ever again. Maybe that's a good thing - what do you think?

It was the mid seventies. People were looking for cheap, economical, reliable cars. There wasn't a market for big cars at the time.

The amazing thing about these monster Fords is how so many people bought them as used cars in the 80's thinking they would die quickly, only to still be driving them in the 90's because these old Fords just keep going and going, like a rock, LOL!
