Capt.Lou Albano..the voice of "Mario The Plumber"is dead!
Posted: Wed Oct 14, 2009 12:11 pm Central Time
Former wrestiling promoter and the voice of the 1990's tv cartoon character "Mario The Plumber" and the live action version of"Mario"from "The Super Mario Brothers Super Show!".is dead at the age of 76!
"Capt.Lou" passed away recently..Asside from promoting sporting events.. he also appeared on WWF"on tv and he was the host/performer and the voice of the bumbling plumber. Who along with his equally inept brother"Luigi"(played by comic/character actor Mr.Danny Wells) managed to foil the evil, fat, abusive and loudmouth lizzard villian"King Cooper" in The Dic tv cartoons/live action comedy/variety kids tv program"The Super Mario Brother Super Show"(Which was based upon the popular video games.)
The series was seen on The Fox TV Network(on WNYW TV Ch.5 The NYC flagship station of The FBC the series was part of "The Fox Five Kids Club"hosted by "D.J. Kat" and my good friend and fellow performer..Mr.Craig Marin's "Flexitoon Puppets"from 1990 to 1991).
The series was later seen on cable tv. Despite his gruff exterior.."Capt.Lou"was a kindly and caring gentleman.. two such examples of his sweet side..was when he was a guest on WWOR TV Ch.9,Seacaucus,N.J.'s/NYC's"Steampipe Alley Show" With Mr.Mario Cantone. Where he taught the kids in the studio and at home the importance of learning sports like wrestiling..but not for the purpose of hurting people or for inflicting revenge.
He also did PSA's as his live version of"Mario"to teach the children to be wary of strangers and to report such dangerous individuals to the proper authorities.
I wish that I had meet Capt.Lou when he was alive..It would have been great to meet him.
But,Sadly it's too late.
(Crying)
Goodbye Capt.Lou,
Kevin S.Butler Formerley"Nostalgia TV!".

Thanks for posting, Kevin!
Personally, I remember Lou from the Cyndi Lauper videos... frankly, long before I was selling tickets to Wrestlemania from the Ticketron booth at Tower Records, my first exposure to "sports entertainment" was through those videos!
Did anyone in the Retroland community actually see Lou wrestle? Share!

Dear Mat Selznick,
No! I've never seen "Capt.Lou"wrestle..and I don't know if anyone else
here at"Retroland's"TV Section ever saw him engage in the sport?
So,I'm not the best person to ask about his involvement with the
sport?
Hopefully?
Someone else here at"Retroland's"tv section can ask that query for
you?
Anyway,
Thanks For Your Reply and Thanks For Remembering:"Capt.Lou"Albano,
Kevin S.Butler Foremerley"Nostalgia TV!". |

Famous of the rubber band accessories on his face as well.
Albano appeared in Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" video playing Lauper's not-too-happy father. He also appeared in the music video for "The Goonies 'R Good Enough" song along with Andre the Giant and some of the Goonies kids (Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Quan) plus bad guy wrestlers The Iron Sheik, Roddy Piper, and Nikolai Volkov.
George DiCenzo played the voice of the animated Lou Albano in the "Hulk Hogan's Rock 'N Wrestling" cartoon show in the 1980s. Produced by DIC which also animated the "Super Mario Brothers Supershow" series. Albano did appear as himself in the live-action segments in "Rock 'N Wrestling" as did the other wrestlers (Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Roddy Piper, Junkyard Dog, Fabulous Moolah, Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkov, Mr. Fuji, Tito Santana, Hillbilly Jim, Wendi Richter) and interviewer Mean Gene Okerlund but they did not perform the voices of the animated versions of themselves in the cartoon stories. _________________ "Over one thousand served"

Best, view
I didn't see The Captain wrestle in his prime when he was half of the tag team, The Sicilians, with Tony Altimore. I did see him wrestle later when he was a manager. He was usually part of a six man tag match with one of his tag teams. He's either go in for a cheap shot or get his butt kicked. Funny stuff, either way.
I thought Capt. Lou was hilarious. I'd look forward to his wrestling interviews every week. And he was into nutrition, too. I remember when he was training The Fabulous Moolah for her bout against Lauper. Lou had Moolah on a diet of unborn virgin goat's milk. Great stuff.
RIP Captain Lou Albano! You were one of a kind! |

I can't believe Capt. Lou is gone. -_-;; I grew up watching him on TV as a teen whether in the wrestling ring, in Cyndi Lauper videos, or playing Mario. May you RIP, Capt. Lou. |

I watched the Super Show for awhile as a kid, and happened to acquire the DVD set used a while back. I plan on acquiring Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World eventually.
RIP Lou _________________ Oh Gloria, with hair like granite. |

Not acutally wrestle, but as a manager at a live show once.
My husband saw Captain Lou (in manager's capacity) at a ton of live shows he went to as a kid.
And about 2 months ago, we sold off the last of my husband's WWF action figures. Captain Lou was in that grouping. And he was in nice condition. rubber bands and all.....

CAPTAIN LOU by NRBQ was a semi-hit song in the early 80s. this music video shows clips of ALBANO in the wrestling ring.

Never saw the Captain wrestle, but I did see him as well in a manager's role back in the mid 80's at a live WWF match. He was downright funny back then. I most remember him in the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"video as the overprotective father....his reaction when he peeked through the keyhole in Cindy's door was hilarious!
A funny entertainer....he was an icon of the 80's and will be sadly missed. _________________
