Computer vs Console
Posted: Sun Feb 17, 2008 12:26 am Central Time
I'll only play games on the computer that emphasize the use of a mouse and keyboard. If the game has an isometric playing field, I'd rather play it on a console. |

It depends.... There are a lot of great games that are only released on computers.... But anything I play on the pc, I use a controller.... I can't stand using the mouse and keyboard for an action game. _________________ www.hauntingheather.com

I remember when King's Quest: Mask of Eternity was released. It wasn't an official King's Quest for many reasons. First, it was an RPG instead of an adventure game. Second, it was significantly darker (by today's standards, it would be rated Teen). Third, it had a 3rd-person interface and isometric playing field. To react more quickly to your enemies would require a joystick rather than the traditional D-pad. |

i've always been partial to the console. i like the feel of a controller, keyboards and a mouse just aren't the same. _________________ can't talk now, the ninjas are watching me think.

At least with a console, you know the game will run smoothly, because that's what it's designed to do.... The performance varies on a Computer. _________________ www.hauntingheather.com

yeah, especially if you don't have that much memory stored on your computer. lag is not fun. _________________ can't talk now, the ninjas are watching me think.

Exactly.... Especially if you're trying to play an on line game.... I hate the lag of some computers, but at least if you have say an Xbox 360 and high speed internet, you'll be just fine. _________________ www.hauntingheather.com

Oh that's a real shell scratcher for me. I to admit that the games for Pc's are getting more interactive than the games for consoles. Then again you probably end up with a huge collection of games that you suddenly can't play anymore when your console dies out, and then it's no longer supported for repair services. I admit sadly that with the constant upgrading and updating with computers and home gaming consoles, it's very hard for me to catch up with it. I had to give up many a games, even rare and special classic arcade titles when my previous game consoles died out and it was no longer supported. And then chances are, you won't be able to play those games anymore, unless you hope and pray that those games are re-made for the gaming console or pc that you have. You realize how hard it can be to get a game or program that you need for your system or console, when the store only sells the programs and games for the newest and today's systems that you don't have. Even Best Buy is fading out the GameCube and GBA for The Wii. |

after recently getting into pc gaming, i've decided to re-evaluate my stance. i'm still dominantly a console person, however, with the increasing number of non exclusive current gen games for the pc, much of my more recent purchases i've been playing on my laptop. i don't have a working mouse which is frustrating, but alot of the controls seem fairly easy to use now that i've spent some time with them. I also definitely like the fact that i can take my laptop on the go and play my entire library without having to lug around discs.
downloadable content is another nice feature. it's not exclusive to pc's, but you don't have to pay for it like you do on consoles. _________________ can't talk now, the ninjas are watching me think.

I play both, because there are a lot of my favorite games that are available only for PC, but not console, and vice versa. The games I normally play on PC are simulation games such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, Roller Coaster Tycoon series and Sim City series. I'm also (slowly) getting into online games. As for console and handheld (PSP, etc.) games, I play a lot of the "old school" arcade classics such as Pac-Man, the countless side and vertical scrolling space "shoot-'em-ups" and driving/racing games. I currently own a PS2, PS3 and PSP and most of my game collection consists of "arcade classics" compilation discs such as Namco Museum, Taito Legends, etc. (mostly on PS2).

This was moved from the Home Gaming forum in the Retropedia section of Retrotalk because the thread doesn't seem to be about retro home gaming... which is the purpose of the Retropedia Home Gaming forum.
Personally, I haven't had a console system for years until we just recently purchased a Wii. I kind of like the seperation of gaming and the computer -- if I have games on my computer, it's too much of a time sink. On the other hand, the extra steps of turning on the console, etc. tend to make me use it less... which is good for my productivity. So I'd have to come down on the console side of the fence.

Anything requiring pointing and clicking should be on a PC (which is why I only play Sim City on the computer). Anything else should be on a console. _________________ Oh Gloria, with hair like granite. |

Shouldn't this be on the gaming forum? Really RM - you're slipping- you have misclassified this conversation. _________________ Wake up and smell the coffee, Mrs. Bueller. It's a fool's paradise. |
